What Are The Advantages Of Hiring Us?

There are a high number of properties in Canada which are served by septic tanks. While they continuously prove to be highly useful to citizens, these tanks remain a potential source of pollution due to nutrients, pathogens and even some toxic chemicals. The risk of pollution grows higher as many homes have in use failing septic systems or ones that are not properly maintained.

Septic cleaning must be done by a trained professional since household wastewater contains disease-causing organisms, a high concentration of phosphorus, nitrogen and toxic chemicals. Therefore, the wastewater must undergo some chemical, biological and physical treatments before being released into the environment.

Septic cleaning must not be taken lightly. All septic systems need to be regularly maintained and inspected to function properly and to prevent contamination of nearby water sources. All septic tank owners should have their systems professionally inspected and cleaned regularly.

Prevent Problems With Your Kelowna Septic System

Homeowners can prevent problems with their septic systems through a variety of simple, proactive measures. The most common way is through water conservation, as this will help with proper functionality of the system. A large quantity of water flowing into the tank in a short time frame will reduce the solids’ settling, as well as disturb the already settled material and push it to enter the drain field. Water conservation can be achieved too by the use of low-flow fixtures, the repair of existing leaks, diversion of the roofs and hoses, drainage away from the septic drain field, etc.

While the time interval of a septic cleaning depends on the inspection’s results, each household’s tank size and level of water usage, such an inspection made by a licensed professional should be performed regularly. This will help each owner catch eventual problems early on and keep solids from accumulating, reaching the outflow and clogging the drain field.

Frequency & Consistency for Septic Tank Cleaning

Septic systems are indeed simple in their design. This is their strength as well as their weakness – though it’s only a weakness if proper care is not administered. That’s why it’s vital to clean your septic tank on a regular basis, getting out ahead of potential problems before they arise.

All drains in your home eventually merge into a single pipe that heads outside and into the septic tank. The waste that’s carried in those drain pipes is all combined into the septic tank and, over time, starts to separate. Sludge is the heaviest particulate and sinks to the bottom of the tank. The middle layer is effluent or “gray water,” while the top “scum” layer comprises fats, proteins and oils. Only the effluent is discharged into the drain field, meaning the other components require regular cleaning.

You can imagine what would (and does!) happen if the septic isn’t cleaned consistently and with regular frequency. Talk to D&L Environmental Ltd. today about when and how to schedule a cleaning for your septic tank in Kelowna, Vernon, Penticton or elsewhere around the Okanagan.

I found a great house, but it has a septic system and not sewer. Should I give up my hopes on buying this house?

Not at all! Modern septic systems are robust, sturdy and effective. We have installed and serviced many septic systems in Kelowna and across the Okanagan. While it’s true that some older septic systems may require attention or service, that is more a function of the age of the home and property.

Having said that, your best bet when buying a home is to hire an inspector to see that the home is in good condition. If you are interested in having D&L check the septic system, we would be happy to do so. Please contact us to set up an appointment for a site visit.

Do I need a pump for my septic system? If so, why?

Chances are, if you live in the Okanagan, you have a property with some rise or slope to it. Many septic systems involve secondary treatment. Raised systems such as sand mounds require a pump. This is necessary for “pressure distribution,” which uses smaller pipe to distribute effluent. This allows effluent to be stored in the pump chamber and pumped to the entire disposal field at once.

Thanks to this kind of system, no part of the disposal field is saturated, whereas the field is able to drain out and dry completely in between doses.

What is hydro excavation? Why does a vacuum truck (septic) company also do this?

Hydro excavation uses high-pressure water and vacuum technology to cut through dirt, rocks, and debris – in a clean and safe manner – to expose utility and electrical systems, pipelines, or to clear a path for next stages of construction. Hydro excavation is a non-destructive means to excavate an area with precision. Also called “daylghting,” this is rapidly becoming the preferred means of cutting and clearing.

The vacuum trucks for septic systems can double as hydrovac trucks, with some essential modifications to the vehicle and systems.
